What’s Amsterdam Monster Factory App?

Amsterdam Monster Factory is a mobile AR application that turns the city of Amsterdam into an interactive playground. Designed as a location-based storytelling experience, the app features a quirky monster family, each member representing a core value of the city. As users walk through town, 3D-animated monsters appear at key landmarks, sharing local stories through voiceovers, animation, and character-driven narratives.

Discovery & Requirements Gathering

We collaborated with the client to define technical needs, narrative goals, and location-specific storytelling mechanics. Each monster was given a role, value, and location.

UX Mapping & Scenario Planning

We created a detailed UX map to visualize user paths, transitions, and use cases, anticipating outdoor interaction and ensuring intuitive flow during the city tour.

UI Design & Visual Prototyping

Our designers developed playful and functional interfaces optimized for on-the-go use, while our dev team began building the location logic and core app architecture.

App Development

Built with Unity and AR Foundation, the app supports precise AR placement in outdoor environments, ensuring monsters appear correctly on sidewalks, façades, or open spaces. We also integrated in-app payments and email collection workflows.

Content Integration

We embedded all 3D animated characters, audio dialogues, and ambient music. Each monster was customized to the location context, enriching the physical space with digital storytelling.

Testing & Publishing

Extensive on-site testing was performed to fine-tune object placement, animation sync, and UI responsiveness. The app was then published on both App Store and Google Play.

Challenges we overcame

Real-world placement – Ensuring that AR monsters appeared naturally in busy urban environments like sidewalks, streets, and building facades.

Unpredictable surroundings – Accounting for constantly changing elements — pedestrians, cars, and other real-world distractions.

Visual consistency – Maintaining immersion and aesthetic quality despite variable lighting and cluttered cityscapes.

Technical precision – We used detailed calibration and smart positioning to make each AR interaction feel smooth, believable, and safe.

Project results

The result was a playful and immersive AR experience that gained strong local traction. It was covered by over 20 media outlets, promoted across schools, libraries, and cinemas, and received support from both the city administration and local businesses. The project is now well-positioned for future commercial scaling and broader audience engagement.
